So You Want To Be a Star? 9 Points About Getting Into Porn

“How do I get into porn?” It’s probably the most common question I get every week on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. I’ve only been doing moves for about a year now, so I still consider myself a porn “newbie.” Nonetheless, the learning curve is sharp in the business, and I feel obligated to share what I’ve learned.

Porn has been an amazing experience. I’ve traveled all over the country, and even to Spain! I’ve made some great friends, shot some movies I’m incredibly proud of, and have had some really hot sex. I mention hot sex last because sex should not be your only reason for getting into porn. Porn is first and foremost a business. If it’s just hot sex you want, you can find that without the challenges that come with working in the industry.

1. Before you ask HOW, think very carefully

You will not be able to conceal you’ve done porn. Your friends and family WILL find out. If that’s going to be an issue, than forget about it. There are certain fields where doing movies could disqualify you from employment- clergy and teaching for example. A porn career is usually 3-5 years at best. Consider what you plan to do after that and whether porn would cause you problems.

2. Do you have what it takes?

There are lots of porn genres these days, but the bottom line is that for the most part, men still like to see hot, fit, muscular men. Is your body in the best shape possible? Do others compliment your appearance? Do you get asked for fitness advice? Not saying you have to be ready for a bodybuilding competition, but showing up to a shoot with a beer gut and love handles isn’t going to fly unless it’s for a specific genre of porn that embraces that. Beyond your body as a whole, what are your best assets? Do you have a super hot bubble ass? Or maybe you’ve got 9 inches or more of big, thick cock? What do you have to offer to a studio? What’s your selling point?

3. Can you perform in front of others

All men love sex. All men love getting off. But can you do it front of two cameras and potentially as many as five or six people watching? Do you have the stamina to kiss, jack-off, and fuck for up to six hours? Do you have the patience to endure stopping and starting multiple times while the crew moves cameras or adjusts the lighting? Can you be agreeable and flexible to do what is asked of you even when it may not be fun or comfortable? Can you get fucked with sandbags under one side of your ass for an hour while grabbing onto a couch? Would you be willing to top if the “would be” top is having trouble getting hard? Would you be willing to bottom if the “would be” bottom is hard, but you’re struggling? If the director wants to incorporate a particular fetish you’re not familar with or may not enjoy, would you, as an actor, be willing to make an effort to pull it off and make it look hot? Whether others recognize it or not, you ARE an actor and the goal here is to put on a performance so hot, others can shoot their load watching. Your personal comfort is not relevant. Make it look hot.

4. Pictures and studios

Do have you have at least six really hot, studio-quality pictures of yourself? If not, it’s time to find a photographer and get some made. They should show you totally nude and hard, front and back. And yes, they MUST include your face. If any of that bothers you, you’re not going to be doing porn.

Once you’ve got good pictures, research the product. What kind of porn do you admire most? What studios have the best lighting? The best production value. The best editing. The best overall promotions. And the hottest men. And look at yourself, then look at the men in the productions from various studios. Do you look like them in terms of body type, body hair, and age? Find a studio that uses men that look like you do.

5. Apply and wait

Regardless of how hot you think you are, no one is just going to “notice” you. You have to go to the studio website and apply. Take it seriously just as you would any job application. Fill out every blank and answer truthfully.

Once you’ve submitted your application, be prepared to wait. The big studios get hundreds, if not thousands of applications each year. It can be weeks before anyone even looks at what you’ve submitted. Add to that, many big studios have already signed loads of “exclusive” performers. They may love your look and think you’d be amazing, but they’re already so overloaded, they can’t take on anyone new.

6. Condom versus bareback

The industry is changing. During the height of the AIDS Epidemic, virtually all gay porn used condoms. With advanced meds for people with HIV, and PreP for those who are uninfected, condoms are no longer the gold standard for every studio in the industry. As in the larger society, there are intense opinions and divisions about this in the gay porn world. We are not debating that here. But it’s important to know that some studios are 100% bareback. Others are 100% condom only. Some of the condom only studios will not work with actors that have previously done bareback commercial porn. Before you start your porn career, it’s important to decide which side you’re going to choose. What you decide will have some impact on where you work and how much you work.

7. Be realistic and do your homework

You are not going to get rich doing porn, but if you pick the right company, you can make a lot of very good money. How do you know which companies pay the most? Look at which companies have the best looking product and which companies do the best in the marketplace? Contact the actors and ask them. Most of us will not tell you exact numbers, but we will tell you what companies pay better than others. There are also other factors to consider: What kinds of hotels do the various studios house their talent in while on a shoot? Is it Motel 6 or is it a Marriott? Do they book you on the cheapest airline possible in the middle of the night or are you on a nice late morning flight seated in Economy Plus? Is it a non-stop flight or do you have a four hour layover in Grand Rapids? Seriously.

8. Beyond the movie shoot

The actual movie shoot is only a small part of your being a porn performer. If you plan to have any longevity in the industry, plan to spend about two hours per day on social media promoting your products (films) and promoting yourself. You must constantly sell your movies to the audience. Tease them with trailers and pictures provided by your studio or studios. Tell them what’s coming-up. Tease them with details from the shoot you just did. Take some “behind the scenes” photos with your iPhone (get them approved by your director before sharing). You must make an effort to connect with your fans all the time. Answer their emails. Be patient with their flirting. Appreciate their compliments no matter how many times you hear “you are so hot, I want you to fuck me.” To someone miles away from the nearest town somewhere in Kansas, you may be the hottest man they’ve ever seen. Regardless of whether you’re attracted to them or not, respect their feelings and always be gracious.

“But wait,” you say. “I’ve already been paid for my part in the movie. Why do I need to promote it? Isn’t that the studio’s job?” Yes. And it’s also YOUR job if you plan to land another movie with that studio or others. The more successful your movie is, the more likely it is the studio will use you in another one. If they know you know how to promote successfully, you’re worth so much more to them than the actor who just collects their check, then moves on to the next project.

9. Have fun

Once you’ve done your first movie, you’ll reflect on the experience as incredibly hard work, but if you made the right decision with the studio you chose, you’ll also have a remarkable sense of pride about it. Sure, we’re not doing “Masterpiece Theater,” but the projects I’ve been involved with aren’t “pump and dump” in a cheap motel either. When my first movie with Titan Men “Blue Collar Ballers” made #1 on TLA Video’s “Best Seller” list, I screen captured the list and sent it both my Mom and Dad! I never won those two Emmys I was nominated for in television news, but this still makes me pretty damn happy. I’m doing something where I bring pleasure to thousands of guys, I get pleasure myself, and I get paid for it. It’s not for everyone. It works for me.

Dallas Steele: When I first decided to go into porn, I agonized over what stage name to use. After talking with a small group of close friends, I came up with five possibilities- all of them amalgamations of cities, big and small, in Texas. I had a contest on Facebook where more than 2000 friends and followers voted. “Dallas Steele” was by far the top vote getter. The conclusion was that it combined my home of almost 20 years with strength of the word “steel.” To me, porn names are supposed to be a bit cliche and funny, so combining my city “Dallas” and the suggestion of a solid erection “Steele,” is all in good fun.

Trent: Why did you choose to work with TitanMen?

Dallas Steele: There are a handful of legendary companies in gay male porn and Titan is one of them. Titan is a powerful brand that represents intense masculinity, sexuality, and style. Anyone can rent a cheap motel room, get some horny men together, and get them to fuck on camera. And while I appreciate that there is market for that, I also feel that men, despite our primal nature, want something more. Trent: What was working with Dirk Caber like? Give us the dirty details!

Dallas Steele: At the time, it was only the second occasion I had ever had sex in a commercial production. Knowing Dirk Caber was a big star and I was the “newbie,” I was very intimidated and nervous (though he says he had no clue all that was going on inside my head). Our scene was intense and the passion you see in it was real. This flip-flop scene was my first time bottoming on camera. We even continued in between takes many times. And later that night, we even did more “exploring” on our own away from the cameras.

More recently, in another upcoming Titan production you’ll see next year, I got to work with Dirk’s real-life husband Jesse Jackman. Jesse is a big man. I’m a big man. That posed some interesting challenges for both of us and for the production crew. The two of us together are more than 500lbs. I think our scene is probably one of my best yet. Trent: You’re a personal trainer, what does your work out routine look like? How many hours to spend in the gym?

Dallas Steele: I spend about 16 hours per week training myself and my workout partner. Four days of lifting, three days of cardio and abs. I consider my cardio days to be “rest days,” but even that is pretty intense. I do HIT or High Intensity Intervals for 40 minutes per session, then 20 minutes of abs. My lifting split is chest/tris, back/biceps, shoulders/traps, and the legs have their own day.

Beyond the hours in the gym are the hours in the kitchen. I cook all of my food two days per week. All of it is weighed and measured. My proteins are fish, chicken and extra lean beef. My carbs are brown rice, sweet potato, Quinoa, and sometimes white potato. I do go out to eat on occasion, but try to keep my diet as clean as possible except for a cheat meal, maybe once every two weeks. I don’t smoke- cigarettes anyway. My biggest vice is probably the occasional vodka and diet 7Up.

Trent: What kind of things turn you on the most in another guy?

Dallas Steele: Breathing and a pulse… lol. One can’t be too choosy at my age. Seriously though, I like all kinds of guys of all ages and all races. I like guys in good shape, who don’t smoke, don’t use a ton of drugs, and most of all, have a good self-image without being full of themselves. Nothing turns me off more than a man who thinks he is somehow better than everyone else based on a six pack or a great ass. Trent: Is there someone special in your life?

I’ve been all over the Caribbean on more than 15 cruises in 10 years. My favorite cruises are Atlantis Events Vacations- all gay cruises. I recently got to travel to Spain for a shoot with another high-end studio, “Men At Play.” It was my first time traveling to Europe. I had an amazing time. Top of my list is London, Paris, and Berlin. Hopefully someday I’ll have the money to get there.

I also love to read- mostly non-fiction or biographies. It has been my experience that truth IS in fact stranger than fiction. I could tell stories from my own life that are unlike anything you’ll ever read in any book.

Trent: Tell us something we would never had guessed about you.

Dallas Steele: I was fat as a teenager. At 15, I was 5’10, weighed 240lbs and had a 40 inch waist. In junior high and high school, I got teased so severely about my weight, I started cutting classes and was eventually kicked out of school. I tried to kill myself but failed, eventually being returned to a continuing high school for misfits of the world. Paired with the drug abusing teens and pregnant girls, I did quite well because we all knew we didn’t fit in. A teacher at the school suggested I take my GED and move on to college- so I did and I finished two years ahead of the losers that had so aggressively teased me. But during that time, I also realized I could do something about my weight. I started walking 30 minutes per day, 3 times per week, then running, then I started changing my diet. Within one year, I had lost 60lbs! It would be another three years before I discovered lifting, but once I picked-up the weight and saw what it could do for me, I was hooked. I’ve now been working out every single day, including holidays and weekends, for 23 years. I’ve missed a total of 42 days of illness and injury.

The second surprise: I spent 23 years as a television news anchor/reporter in four states and five cities! My longest run was in Dallas where I worked for the CBS affiliate and was nominated for two regional Emmys. I left the business in 2013 after my boss in SW Florida told me that research had shown “people here just don’t like you.” Add to that, the immense pressure of daily ratings where your job is virtually on the line every single day. TV news as we know it is dying, and the old school model is trying to divide a financial pie that has shrank by 75% in just 15 years. As someone who “paid his dues” for two decades, I wasn’t willing to go back to doing every job I did in a small market for less money. I get asked daily by porn fans if I miss TV news. I miss telling great stories, I miss the rush of sharing breaking news and I miss getting to know viewers. What I don’t miss is the schizophrenic management at every station that can’t decide from day to day what they want, and as a result are constantly blaming the talent and trying to make the talent be something they aren’t. The irony is, if they left the talent the fuck alone to be who we are, viewers would be a lot happier. Most anchors are so beat down, even they don’t have a clue anymore about who they really are.
